The replacement of the “Cheese”, home of Engineering student activity for the past 40 + years, was a challenging puzzle requiring an open dialogue between students, alumni, and designers. This was accomplished through a series of design charrettes and subsequent siting studies which tested the future space program on the chosen site. As the selected site was a courtyard surrounded on four sides by existing buildings, there were many design discussions especially around pedestrian movement, connection and the possible spatial relationship to the neighboring buildings. The resulting siting studies looked at a variety of options for students and faculty to consider in the upcoming stages of the project.
