The renovation of a formerly unused office space into a new mental health unit is an illustration of integrating sustainable design into an aging health care facility. Through the use of Integrated Design Management, the JDa team came together with the multiple client groups to discuss design, function, and existing hospital standards to provide a solution which created an interior “neighbourhood” design. Although challenging to combine the required levels of security with a strong desire for a sustainable solution, the team used every oppourtunity to incorporate “way finding” and social skill development in the overall design. The project earned the first healthcare LEED-CI certification in all of North America.
