This small building addition clad in zinc shingled tiles was envisioned as subtle silver sliver juxtaposed with the large metal clad facade of the Coal Mining and Processing Laboratory. It not only contrasts the existing rock crushing lab in delicacy, colour, material and transparency but also in program providing the Mining Institute with study space, and faculty offices. In addition, the building serves as a connecting threshold, linking the sloping topography of the site with the existing floors of the lab building. By providing an elevated walkway on the east and a series of concrete entry stairs on the west this building adds to the network of pedestrian pathways so important on this campus.
